An American flag built entirely out of rattlesnakes. Thousands of two-and-a-half inch stamp impressions in hues of blue, red and white, pressed one at a time until the whole surface is stripes and a field of stars.
Every snake is the same carved stamp. Same tool, same gesture, over and over. What changes is the pressure, the load of paint, the angle of the hand. No two come out alike, and none of them were meant to. A final moment of fire is passed across the surface adding additional texture, color and aging to the surface beyond what the stamp and paint can achieve.
Up in the stars, one snake is gold leaf. Rougher than the rest, brighter, impossible to miss once you have found it.
