The Death Of A Bird & Innocence is not a memorial—it’s a reckoning. This piece is built from rupture, silence, and the emotional aftermath we rarely speak aloud. It was inspired in part by a childhood memory: growing up in Goliad, Texas, the artist once attempted to bury a group of guineas after a violent storm, not understanding they were still alive. Confused, grieving, and too young to make sense of death or survival, he acted from a place of deep care and profound misunderstanding.
That moment—of trying to give rest to something not yet gone—echoes through this work. The figure here isn’t dissolving so much as unraveling. Identity slips, memories bleed, and the canvas becomes a slow, quiet scream. The title encompasses not only the physical near death experience of the birds, but also that of the innocence of the subject, the artist as a young boy: The Death Of A Bird & Innocence. However, there is a vast difference between the memory of the artist, and that of the subject in the painting,
Rather than attempting to provide the guineas with respite, the subject here has deliberately caused the death of a bird with his weapon, the slingshot. Tears stream from his eyes, and the pain of regret and shame cast a shadow over his young face.
The painting echoes with apologies, and cries for forgiveness from the boy's mother scrawled, with the word, "slingshot" repeated. This painting echoes the idea that the results of actions we may initially deem harmless, can have enormous and life-changing effects.
